In the first reading for today, the prophet Isaiah is addressing the Israelites who are exile in Babylon. In many ways, these people had given up on God. They seemed to think that God was done with them. They stopped looking for the hand of God in their present situation.
When we stop looking for God, it is nearly certain that we won’t find God.

Jesus is led into the wilderness where he spends 40 days fasting which is then followed up by a time of testing and temptation. I’m not sure after 40 days of fasting that I would have much resolve against temptation — and that is the point. When Jesus is tempted, he is in a place of great vulnerability.
