The work of the Finance Committee

Under Canon Law, the parish priest is, ultimately responsible for all matters relating to the finances and property of the parish.

The Finance Committee is established under Article 537 of Canon Law and advises the Parish Priest on financial and property issues.  It is a mandated body having an advisory and consultative role with the parish priest. The committee meets regularly, with specific agendas and has access to the relevant financial information and policies of the parish. It works closely with the parish priest, who is accountable to the diocesan bishop for the administration and stewardship of the temporal goods of the parish.

The Committee members take on specific delegated roles as well as sharing the overall business of the committee.  The key to the delegation is to separate functions between different personnel to assist in financial probity and to involve a number of people in financial operations to help with continuity.
